Role
The Red Sox claimed Mickey Gasper off waivers from Washington in February. He bounced between Worcester and Boston until August, then got very hot. He played 67 games, 33 at DH, 15 at catcher and 10 at first base. A torn biceps tendon ended his year on Sept. 25, and he had distal biceps repair on Oct. 2. He's said the recovery takes four to six months (per MLB Trade Rumors, via the Boston Globe's Tim Healey).
Outlook
His first stint was quiet: .243/.305/.308 with no homers in 119 plate appearances. After his Aug. 16 recall he hit .262/.415/.667 with 10 homers in 106. MLB.com's Ian Browne compared the run to Shane Spencer's 1998, and said he doesn't expect it to continue. The split matters too. Gasper had a .902 OPS against right-handers and went 2-for-24 against lefties. He's pre-arbitration and has one option left (per MLB Trade Rumors).
Our take: the 10-homer month won't repeat, but the 27 walks in 225 plate appearances and a 10.4% barrel rate say he can hit righties. He'll be the left side of a DH platoon and the emergency catcher. Twelve homers in part-time duty is a fair call.
